ENTOMOLOGY
RESEARCH

SOUTH AFRICA

SERVICES

We provide Nature Reserves, Parks, Private Land Owners, and Organisations with biodiversity surveys and insect related data in the forms of: species checklists; abundance profiles; and in-depth biodiversity reports.

This information is then shared on various online databases for use in field guides, and further research projects. The data collected provides a beneficial contribution towards the conservation and species management of insects across Southern Africa.

PROJECTS

Various entomological projects are currently under way, including: custodianship of rare and endangered insect species; ground-breaking research; and distribution mapping across Southern Africa.

Students and nature enthusiasts can participate on selected projects, contributing to the information gathered, and gaining valuable experience on topics such as insect biodiversity, monitoring and entomological research and conservation techniques.

LOCATIONS

Covering the entirety of Southern Africa, we facilitate, create and manage field research trips and exploration projects throughout the region.

Although field work and projects are currently focused on South African species and biodiversity, the project outlines, methods and techniques can be applied throughout the world, and thus the skills developed and collaboration inspired on projects are of international value.

ABOUT US

Insects are a vital part of any ecosystem. They perform many important functions. They aerate the soil, pollinate blossoms, and control insect and plant pests. Many insects, especially beetles, are scavengers, feeding on dead animals and fallen trees, thereby recycling nutrients back into the soil

Established in 2010, the Entomological Research Unit focuses on entomological exploration, research and field work throughout Southern Africa, facilitating projects and research initiatives including data collecting, monitoring of endangered species, distribution mapping and contribution towards ground breaking discoveries in insect knowledge.
